hi experts,
My primary database file is full and i need help to add secondary database file. how can i do it?
Thanks
I am looking to build out my SQL database but don't yet have all the data for it. I know what dimension and measures I want to create but want to be able to build out the structure first before I get all of the data. For example I am looking to build out our Revenue forecast model for the next 5 years and would like to set up a data cube to capture all of the pieces to this revenue model as the data becomes available. Some of these pieces will be forecast data for 2016-2020. Several questions....is there a way in SQL to add in the basic structure of the cube (like year, 2016, 2017, 2018, etc...) and add the data later? If so is there also a tool like Smartview for SQL or some kind of Pivot Table that will allow me to manage the data within the database? I'm thinking an Excel add on or something would be best... Many of the people who are going to be populating this database with data are not tech savvy but do know how to use excel. Idealy I would like to set them up with a way to manage the data with ease from within excel and have them read/write data back to the SQL database.
What tool could I use to manage the data and populate it at a later date? Ideally I would like to have something like an Excel pivot table that people could set up themselves where then can get the data view they are looking for and then add in data via the pivot table design and have it write back to the database. Currently Pivot Tables do not allow you to modify the data inside of it. HFM for example has an Excel addin called "Smart View" that will allow you to query the data you are looking for, modify it and then save it back the database.
Is there a way either through Excel pivot tables or some excel addin that will allow me to write and save data to the database?
And second is there a tool that will allow me to add additional dimension values, like years to the year field as I move forward? For example let's say now I want to add in years 2021-2025, is there a tool that will allow me to append these years to the"year" field dimension?
Thanks and let me know if this doesn't make sense.

Hi Guys
In our application we are copying data between 2 sqlserver databases using linked server. Say, sqlserver1 is source and sqlserver2 is destination, then, our application will be on sqlserver2 box and will copy data from sqlserver1 to sqlserver2.
User also need to choose from which database of sqlserver1, the data need to be copied. This data is our application data.. Nothing related to sqlserver database
We are using the following query, to get the database names of the source sqlserver..
SELECT * FROM <linked server to dest db>.master.sys.databases
My questions is :
is this query generic enough that works on all sqlserver versions?
Is the master database name of sqlserver configurable or its alwasys fixed as "master"?
Hi
I am not using linked server for fetching data from different server but receiving as below errors.
How to resolve this error? Pl. help

Hello,
I'm trying to run the query given below but iFile.Pathname is underlined in red.
Query: SELECT top 1 iFile.Pathname AS 'PathName' FROM Videos
Error: Cannot find either column "iFile" or the user-defined function or aggregate "iFile.Pathname", or the name is ambiguous.
Do I need to run a procedure?

Hi there
Simple and conventional OLTP database, we need to capture all changes for insert into a DW via staging / ods etc.
Is there a recommended approach for this? Obviously it has to be real time as there might be multiple updates for a time period. I'm thinking of triggers on OLTP tables (bad for performance as it's synchronous), or change data capture, service broker as asynchronous methods.
Any preferences? If so, why please?
Much appreciated.
I have a varchar(900) which means that I can use 900bytes, so if I am not wrong if the character is unicode, y only can use 450 because each character need two bytes.
I have a databease with a column that use the intercalation general_latin_CI_AI, but I don't know if this intercalation use 1byte per character or use 2bytes per character.
How can I know how many bytes need a character of a varchar column?
Thanks so much.
I am trying to Import data into SQL server 2008 using management studio. The source data is an Access dbase. I am trying to do this with queries as the tables do not match but I do need to copy specific columns for the source to the destination. Can someone provide a brief example selecting a column from the source table, and just entering a dummy value for other columns(other column of data for destination table does not exist in source table).
For the example
Source access dbase, just two columns but no primary key, T2dbase, EmployeeNew table.
First Name, Description
Tom , manager
Destination dbase SQLServer (T1dbase,Employee table), note 4 columns
Primary key NameID, FirstName nvarchar (20), LastName nvarchar (20), Description nvarchar(20)
Thanks.

insert into email values(2,'NET','hari01@gmail.com;Manju@gmail.com;srinu@gmail.com;')
insert into email values(3,'SAP','Manju@gmail.com;srinu@gmail.com;hari01@gmail.com;')
insert into email values(4,'DWH','raj@gmail.com;srinu@gmail.com;hari01@gmail.com;Manju@gmail.com')
In this above table i have to delete groupmail column only srinu@gmail.com
Hello,
Good evening.
I want your valuable suggestion's to design hierarchy model table to store product racking information.
My explanation will become easy to understand if you imagine EXCEL sheet.
Assume if a rack arranged as Rows and Columns each product will be store in a particular location (Row 2 - Column B).
I want to populate this information in a Tree control.
How to design a hierarchy model table.
Please Advise.
Thank you.

Hello folks,
I currently have a DB that is growing at a rate of 10gb per month. It is set to 1mb unrestricted growth and the log file is set to 400mb restricted growth. I take regular transaction log backups so the log file is well under under without any issue. This DB's recovery model is set to FULL as it has to be mirrored to a backup site. Any recommendations on how to control the growth.
- Is it advisable to take create a new DB with data older than 2 years and transfer that file to an external drive and if i do this, can i "attach" it back to the main server if and when required ?
Any suggestions ??
My business use case is I have list of items and will store order of items when adding items into the list.
If I want to move an item to 2nd place then I need to update total items order to maintain list in sorted order.
To avoid this I need to create big gaps for each item order value.I have done this by giving the first item order value 2 billion and for second item I am halving that and assign 1billion and so on.
If any item is moved from one position to another position then I am getting average of above and below position values of new position and assigning that new order to current item and inserting that at new position. So we don't need to change other items order values.
But when adding items to list by using halving logic I can only insert 31 items with different orders after that other inserted orders are assigned to 0.I need every item to have different order so that I can get values in sorted order. If you know Team Foundation server you can look at how the backlog priority works.
Do we have any algorithm to achieve this type of mechanism?Let me know if you have any solution. If my question is unclear look athttp://blogs.msdn.com/b/visualstudioalm/archive/2014/05/14/behind-the-scenes-the-backlog-priority-or-stack-rank-field.aspx In that link they have explained how backlog priority works. But I want more information and logic for my business.
Hi,
Can someone advise me please on the following?
this website describes how Merge statements should be optimized by the use of indexes on the target?source tables:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc879317(v=sql.105).aspx
It says that a clustered index should be created on the join column in the target
and a unique covering index on the source table.
I have read in other articles that insert/delete/update statements perform worse on tables with clustered indexes as the leaf level pages will have to be reorganized.
Can someone help me understand why in the case of Merge statement having a indexes actually improve the performance of insert/delete/update statements?
Thanks in advance
Hi, i ve install sql server 2012 in my pc and i want to change datetime default format. How can i do this and please i dont want to take the result from select convert() or select cast or something like this. I ve want to take the format i want writing query select datecolumn from table.

Is any way to convert automaticaly by select only column? or can i change at all once? or must write function to when i select the column can change automatic ? or another thing, i ve see in column properties something like formula. In computed column specification in formula i wrote this: ((CONVERT([varchar](10),getdate(),(104))+' ')+CONVERT([varchar](10),getdate(),(108))) and i take the format i want automaticaly but i get the current date for all rows and i cant edit or insert that column anymore. So please help me to change the format of date time but no from select query. Thank you
